Common Myths and Facts about IVF

Common Myths and Facts about IVF

People worry about IVF and feel it could lead to pregnancy problems. Yet, this is not true as it is quite safe to undergo IVF. One can have a safe delivery.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) has indeed its fair share of myths. Some people happen to find IVF or Test Tube Baby is an expensive treatment that only rich people can rather afford. To some, IVF means twins and triplets. One can visit ivf centers in Hyderabad.

Common Myths and Facts about IVF

Invitro Fertilization Procedure

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) refers to a complex series of procedures that are made use of for treating fertility problems that do come in way of conceiving a child. As part of the IVF treatment, mature eggs are retrieved from ovaries as well as fertilized by sperm in a lab. After that, the fertilized embryos are implanted in one’s uterus. Each cycle of IVF does take about two weeks to be completed and it is considered to be one of the most effective forms of Assisted Reproductive Technology. One can find much information at ivf centers in Hyderabad.

However, there are indeed several factors, which affect the chances of having a healthy baby via IVF. Age and cause of infertility are factors, which do affect the chances of successful IVF.

Myths and Facts Surrounding IVF

1. Lifestyle Modifications Can Improve Success Rate of IVF (In Vitro Fertilization)

In case one has been exercising, one can have a better diet, maintain an active lifestyle and also give up on sedentary lifestyle habits such as drinking or smoking, it is not necessary that one’s IVF will be successful. Poor nutrition does indeed affect one’s fertility. Women with BMI (body mass index) above 30 or perhaps those who are underweight might also face difficulty in conceiving a baby. However, one needs to bring about lifestyle modifications, which can indeed actually help in increasing the success rate of IVF, like having proper sleep. Research does indicate that women who take 7 to 8 hours of sleep at night are more likely to have successful IVF.

2. IVF requires being admitted to a hospital and take complete bed rest during and after the treatment

Only the egg collection procedure in IVF does require the patient to stay in the hospital for a day. Staying overnight in the hospital is not necessary for IVF. Outcomes of IVF might turn out to be better even without taking bed rest.

3. You have no control in making an IVF cycle successful

This is not true. Doctors can indeed evaluate the success rate of IVF via several procedures. Women who have a good ovarian reserve are rather more likely to have a successful IVF cycle. Women also require to know if their uterus is prepared for implantation. Fibroids, polyps and scar tissues in the uterine cavity are checked through ultrasounds and x-rays to see if implantation can be done or not. Fallopian tubes should be clear, without any fluid as this reduces the success rate of IVF. Semen analysis and sperm count are also seen before going ahead with the IVF cycle. One can find these measures in ivf centers in Hyderabad.

4. IVF is one of the best solutions for patients with an infertility problem.

There are many options for couples who are experiencing infertility. Treatment protocols are indeed tailored to each couple and are dependent on factors such as how long a couple has been trying to get pregnant, the age factor and the results of testing. Women with blocked tubes are better treated with IVF, though surgery may also be an option. Treatment plans are individualized.

5. The Success Rate of IVF is very high and can be conceived in the very first cycle.

IVF is successful in up to 40% of cases. Some may indeed need one to two cycles to conceive. Success much depends on the number of factors such as the age of the female, the reason for infertility, biological and hormonal factors.

6. IVF treatment is covered by insurance

Many feel that insurance companies do offer coverage for the various stages of the evaluation and treatment of infertility. Policies vary in terms and conditions.

7. Babies conceived through IVF may rather have a higher chance of birth defects, low birth weight or developmental delays.

The absolute risk of delivering an IVF baby with malformations is no doubt very low. The birth defect risk is not all that much. Women experiencing infertility may be at a slightly higher risk of pregnancy complications. Pregnancy-related complications do get increased with ovarian stimulation, though this can indeed be largely attributed to risks associated with multiple pregnancies. Babies that are born from IVF maybe a wee bit smaller than those conceived naturally.

8. IVF is for women only

This is false. There are several techniques such as ICSI, IMSI and PICSI designed to help situations when a man is suffering from low sperm count or poor sperm motility. There are situations where the woman is fine and the factor causing infertility is in the man such as male factor infertility.

9. IVF is expensive; it is only for the rich

IVF is affordable. Couples can save towards IVF. One can pay in installments in some clinics. The insurance coverage is there.

10. Infertility treatment is very stressful

Stress sometimes contributes to the cause of infertility. While stress does not cause infertility, but infertility does lead to stress. Infertile women suffer from anxiety and stress as compared to fertile women and there is some indication that infertile women are more likely to become rather depressed. This is not surprising since the far-reaching effects of infertility can indeed interfere with work, family, sex, and money. One needs to find ways to reduce tension, stress as well as anxiety.
