Most Common Myths During Pregnancy - Are They Real?

Myths surround pregnancy and need to be ignored as there is no truth in them. It is better for couples to be aware of the falsity of these myths as then they can have a safe delivery.

Pregnancy is no doubt an exhilarating new experience and involves a lot of responsibility. Also, the woman, as well as her partner, does undergo a lot of unwanted apprehension & anxiety. Furthermore, family members suggest and give tips as to how one can cope up with pregnancy. IVF pregnancy precautions need to be considered.

Most Common Myths During Pregnancy - Are They Real?

There are so several myths surrounding pregnancy. Definitely the couple has to be aware of these myths.

Top 9 Myths During Pregnancy :

Pregnancy Myth 1 – Curd needs to be avoided during pregnancy

Fact – Curd is acknowledged as a rich source of calcium,  that is essential during pregnancy. Besides building teeth as well as bones, calcium also does keep the blood and muscles moving and also helps the nerves send messages from the brain to the rest of one’s body. Ivf pregnancy precautions do help at the time pregnancy.

​Pregnancy Myth 2 – Chocolate is indeed bad for a person during pregnancy

Fact – A small amount of dark chocolate during pregnancy (especially during the first & second trimesters) can no doubt help improve circulation and reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia. The improved blood flow does help the placenta develop and function normally, leading to good pregnancy outcomes.

Pregnancy Myth 3 – Papaya is rather unsafe for consumption during pregnancy

Fact – Ripe papaya is safe during pregnancy as it is considered to be a rich source of fiber, potassium, Vitamin C & folate which are very beneficial during pregnancy.
Unripe papaya does contain latex which can rather lead to marked uterine contractions and could be unsafe in pregnancy.

​Pregnancy Myth 4 – Mangoes are unhealthy for a person during pregnancy

Fact – Mango is a power-packed fruit. Mangoes are rich in antioxidants, such as beta carotene and vitamin A, C and D, very important during pregnancy. Mango consumption can definitely cause an increase in blood sugar levels. Thus, it is not all that advisable for obese mothers or those who are diabetic to consume the fruit.

​Pregnancy Myth 5 – There is no need for supplements during pregnancy

Fact – During pregnancy, the nutritional needs increase 3 times for various minerals as well as vitamins. Our diet, therefore, does not suffice for most cases and hence, external nutritional supplements are always required.

​Pregnancy Myth 6 – Eating saffron & oranges during pregnancy can indeed make the baby fairer

Fact – Complexion of the baby much depends on various factors including genetic factors. It does not depend on the foods that a person eats.

Pregnancy Myth 7 – Exercising during pregnancy is considered to be harmful to the baby

Fact – If you had a strict work out regime before getting pregnant, you should not suddenly discontinue. A lighter work- out routine under appropriate guidance can help in making one feel more energetic and happier.
However, in case one is not used to work out before, then a short light walk in a day is always good as it makes one more active and energetic.

​Pregnancy Myth 8 – Morning sickness only happens in the morning

Fact – Nausea and vomiting is no doubt common during pregnancy due to constant changes in hormones and can happen at any time of the day. In most cases, it does happen during the morning hours. For some women, the condition does begin to improve after the first trimester but for others, it does continue throughout their pregnancy.

​Pregnancy Myth 9 – I should be ‘eating for 2’ during pregnancy

Fact – There is no scientific explanation of ‘eating for two’ during the time of pregnancy. The nutritional needs increase at this time but overeating is bad for both one and the baby’s health. A well-balanced diet is advisable.

IVF pregnancy precautions should not be sidetracked while paying attention to the falsehood of myths.
